Claude Schnepf heads Scierie et Caisserie de Steinbourg, one of the leaders in the beech market in France with 75,000 m3 processed annually, a capacity which will soon increase to 100,000 m3 thanks to a major investment program. The company exports 70% of its turnover outside the EU (€ 21m in 2019), mainly to China, a market that Claude Schnepf has known for 25 years...

The first autumn auctions in France have just been launched by France's Natonal Forest Office (ONF) in a general uncertain political-economic climate. This lack of prospects also concerns the timber market in France. This is one of the conclusions to be drawn from the auction of September 8, 2020 which was not held in Beaune (Côte d'Or), as usual, but in Châtenoy-le-Royal (Saône-et-Loire) due to Covid-19. The entire auction therefore took place entirely online without the physical presence of buyers and observers in the auction room...

Oak has become priceless in France! This statement may seem exaggerated but the examination of the auction results for the first five months of 2018 leaves no doubts about the current state of the oak market in France. Year-on-year and on average (see table 1), the price increase of logs reached 25%, exceeding 50% over two years

In the second quarter of the current year, trade on the French hardwood markets was mixed. The French oak continues to run with the wind, and the industry representatives do not see reasons why it should stop. In processed goods, virtually all products find

On the French hardwood market – depending on the species and the product grades – the results of 2016 are heterogeneous from the point of view of timber auctions. In the oak sector the situation keeps getting better. French sawmill owners benefit from the fortuitous combination of circumstances, namely

The launch of the so-called labeled auctions (i.e. under the labels of quality, as in FSC etc.) organised by ONF (Office national des forêts) doesn't seem to have had any effect on the quality oak sales. This is one of the conclusions buyers and sellers could reach at the close of the latest auctions held early this summer. In the end of May, ONF announced that an annual oak price growth on average came up to 5%, while the volume of unsold goods reached 10%

Hardwood logs auction sales have moved forward and faced new tendencies. In the end of Q1 2016, new trends seem to emerge in the oak sector. Following three years of uninterrupted growth of the oak log prices, the industry now sees the end of this epoch

French oak sawmill owners hope for the best and preferably faster, obviously. Even though they doubted that the so-called labeled auctions (i.e. under the labels of quality, as in FSC etc.) would have any immediate impact on the price of logs, they were hoping for the oak prices to stabilize. However, this does not seem to be the case judging by the results of the most recent auctions.

Good news for forest owners in southwestern France. In a French softwood roundwood market that has generally tended to falter, maritime pine stands firm this year. Over the course of the first half of 2015, prices have aligned at high levels, while over the last six months of the year, price stability prevailed. This observation applies in particular for roundwood with a volume larger than 1 m3, intended for producing lumber. ''In late autumn, the large volume roundwood (1,5 m3) is still marketed at around 40 euro/m3, standing, under bark,'' says Emmanuel de Montbron

For French forest owners there are some good news. For French sawyers, it's rather the opposite. The latest public auction organized in France in mid 2015, shows no pause in the oak roundwood market. Actually, the contrary can be noticed, with new tensions on supplies to sawmills resulting in significant price increases in many French production areas since the beginning of 2015

In the first quarter of 2015, oak wood is still kept on the trot in France. Trading activity of sawmills and timber procurers seems to be even more dynamic than in late 2014. Public auctions, currently taking place in Eastern France prove the above mentioned statement. There’s the minimum quantity of the outstanding goods, and demand outreaches supply (up to 20 bids for each attractive lot)

With the weak construction sector in France, and despite the obvious lack of wood in forests in the Hexagon, the decline in French softwood log prices has begun. The recent auctions organized in the fourth quarter this year already confirm this trend...
