Wijma Douala, subsidiary of the Koninklijke Houthandel G. Wijma & Zonen B.V, IFIA member, added another forest concession to their FSC certificate. Already certified in 2005 for 41,965 ha the total Wijma FSC certified forest area is now 120,000 ha.
The ambitious goal of IFIA, is, thanks to its members, to reach 10 million ha of FSC certified tropical forests by 2012.
With this second FSC certificate, Wijma reasserts its commitment towards forestry certification. This certificate testifies the fact that the companies preserve biodiversity (only trees whose regeneration is secured by young shoots are cut) and that the local population benefits from the positive effects of forest exploitation.
The Wijma team, advised by environmental NGOs, made sure that all interested parties were consulted before they went through the certification audit.
Managing Director of Wijma Africa, Maarten Wijma congratulated all involved in achieving this latest milestone, commenting “They really have to support the FSC philosophy. In succession of the FSC certificate received on the previous concession in 2005 it is a tremendous effort to achieve this under not always very easy circumstances”.
With this new FSC certification, Wijma is now in a position to triple production of FSC certified species including Azobé/Ekki and Tali for construction projects such as lock gates, bridges, piling, balconies and brise soleils as well as Sapele, Sipo, Iroko, Movingui, & Padouk for the international timber trade.
