A shot of activity hitting the framing lumber market Wednesday firmed up mill quotes, but producers struggled to bounce prices back to the levels at which they started the week. Some traders anticipated that weakening prices early on would send buyers deeper into their shells. Instead, deeper cuts helped pull in wholesalers to cover shorts and some distributors and dealers needing to replenish after several weeks of thin purchasing. With mills unable to recoup all of their early losses, the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price fell $8, to $303.

A surge in sanded plywood sales in the aftermath of the earthquake in Chile set the pace in structural panel markets. Mill sales of OSB remained quiet, and prices in most regions were unchanged. A rush of sanded orders that hit Southern Pine plywood producers led to a spillover of activity in sheathing. Fuel was added to the activity when word circulated that a large producer would reduce its offerings over the next few weeks. The earthquake in Chile increased interest in western Fir sanded panels. Inquiries surged on Wednesday.
