Recent calculations by the Swedish Forest Agency indicate that the damage suffered by Swedish forestry because of the storm Gudrun is approximately 18.4 billion SEK (circa 2 billion euro).
In January 2005 the storm Gudrun hit Southern Sweden. It was the worst storm in modern times. The total quantity of felled timber was 75 million cubic metres. Upon request by the Swedish Government the Forest Agency has calculated the damage caused by the storm. These calculations will serve, among other things, as basis for the Government's coming application for funds from the EU solidarity fund.
The costs for the storm may increase further, because future costs for Swedish forestry, for example inventories, increased counselling and consultation, as well insect damage cannot yet be estimated.
