Germany drives growth in European softwood logs and lumber exports to China

Due to a massive boost of exports from Germany, total European softwood logs and softwood lumber deliveries to China expanded by 256% and 33% respectively in the first half of 2019.

According to the latest Eurostat figures, in January-June 2019, EU's softwood logs exports to China increased more than 3 times over the same period of 2018.

Belgium has exported most of the total European volume, with a share of 54% of all European exports, followed by Czechia and Germany (+8,025% yoy).

Softwood lumber exports also increased sharply in the first half of 2019, following a relatively modest 2018. Finland, Sweden and Germany accounted for more than 80% of the overall EU exports. Year-on-year, Finnish exports increased slightly by 3%, while Swedish softwood lumber shipments to China dropped by -15%. Meanwhile, those from Germany sustained the overall growth in European exports, and increased by +388%.
