The Mühlböck DYNAMIC 1003 PREMIUM tunnel dryer, as operated at Saldus / Latvia, perfectly combines the advantages of continuous drying with the highly efficient heat recovery system

Tunnel dryers, in which sawn timber is continuously fed through the drying plant with different climatic zones, have been an integral part of the comprehensive product portfolio of the Austrian specialists in timber drying Mühlböck, for some years now.

“In particular, the highly efficient Type 1003 heat recovery system has already achieved notable success across the world. Thus, for example, our tunnel dryers are in operation in Central Europe, the Baltic States, Russia, and Scandinavia. And in the near future we will add North America”, comments Mühlböck with pride in announcing the contract to build a dryer of this type in New Brunswick, Canada

Within this context, CEO Richard Mühlböck also announced the company’s latest innovation - the FLOW tunnel dryer - that combines a tunnel dryer with the successful drykiln systems This latest achievement combines the features and benefits of both systems in a single system.

Continuous drying for continuous timber production

Drawing conclusions from customer feedback in recent years, Richard Mühlböck realised: “Many customers had previously commented that the continuous processing of timber, from lumber feed to the corresponding further processing, is interrupted with the stacking of the sawn timber into a drying kiln”. As Mühlböck explains: “A conventional tunnel dryer, like the current design in our product portfolio, with or without the Type 1003 heat recovery system, is very often fitted with balanced climatic zones for specific ranges of sawn timber”. However, from his experience in talking with many customers Mühlböck also acknowledges that: “Large quantities of a specific range of timber are required in order to use this system effeciently. And in practice, this often meant that many of those initially interested in this drying system did not short list it”.

Utilising the flexibility and variety of equipment for drying kilns

With the appropriate engineering design, the FLOW tunnel dryer combines the all-round capability of drying kilns with the continuous feeding principle of the tunnel dryer.

Mühlböck has been utilising a system of output classes for drying kilns, for more than 15 years, whereby the drying kilns are designed accordingly to match the potential drying rate of the timber.

The new FLOW tunnel dryer has different climatic zones, each of which functions like a separate drying kiln

However, in order to achieve optimum drying results over the entire drying process, the plant must be so efficient that it achieves both the potential for sufficient dehumidification at the beginning of drying and the climate for high grade drying at the end of drying.

To achieve the ideal combination of drying systems, explains Christian Grilz, tunnel drying specialist at Mühlböck, “Separate drying zones are installed in the FLOW tunnel dryer as individual drying kilns one behind the other. Each of these sections is perfectly capable of meeting the requirements for sawn timber throughout the entire drying process”.

Combination available with all Mühlböck heat recovery systems

Customisation of the plant to the respective requirements of the customer is extended by combining individual drying zones with Mühlböck heat recovery systems. As Grilz explains in simple terms: “Heat recovery in the dryer sections is individually matched to the potential for saving energy. These are usually the early stage drying zones, where the drying rate is highest”, which makes the utilisation of these systems very exact and therefore highly efficient.

The Type 1306 PRO heat recovery system, in combination with special air ducts, exhaust fans and air-air heat exchangers, has proven to be particularly suitable.

Specific and proven drying schedules with easy to use visualisation

However, it is not just the heat recovery systems and the many equipment details from Mühlböck drying kilns that make this system so cost effective, it is also the drying schedules from the Mühlböck Timber Research department, which ensure maximum efficiency and perfect drying quality.

The 1306 PRO heat recovery module is the ideal combination for the FLOW tunnel dryer and is already in use in some 200 plants throughout the world

The computer programmers at Mühlböck have developed their own control system for the new tunnel dryer, based on the latest Siemens software. Ideal handling of data is ensured through intuitive operation, a simple clear GUI, various interfaces for mobile data acquisition units and the option of controlling the system through mobile devices. In addition, all of the safety technology has been designed with the greatest possible operator safety in mind, while taking simplicity of operation into account.

Maximum depth of experience and ideal processing of orders

Summarising the benefits of flexible and continuous drying with the new drying system, Mühlböck believes that: “The FLOW tunnel dryer now gives many sawmill companies a great opportunity to combine the advantages of Mühlböck systems with the flexible and specific requirements of each individual customer.

And as a family business with many years of experience in the planning, production, installation and handling of drying plant projects, we personally guarantee the highest possible quality with our drying solutions,” adds Managing Director Richard Mühlböck in conclusion.
