The German furniture industry turned over 17.2 billion euros last year - a decrease of 3.7 percent compared to the previous year.

"This means that our industry came through the Corona crisis comparatively robustly in 2020," states Jan Kurth, Managing Director of the furniture associations (VDM / VHK). “Since the beginning of 2021, however, the situation has been much more difficult. The second, even longer lockdown hits furniture manufacturers in what is actually the best-selling time of the year. The furniture stores - and thus the main sales channel - have been closed for nine weeks as a result of the pandemic. "
Kurth assumes that consumer interest in living and furnishing will remain high in the future. “However, there is still no opening perspective for the furniture trade,” he complains. "We have made a number of proposals for a secure opening to the politicians." Looking ahead to the coming months was marked by great uncertainty, the current order situation was weak and the supply chains threatened to tear. The time at which the retail trade will reopen will determine the further course of business.
Last year, the domestic market for the industry proved to be significantly more stable than exports, as the surveys by the Federal Statistical Office show. While the domestic sales of German furniture manufacturers only fell by 1.6 percent, foreign sales fell by 7.9 percent. The industry-wide export quota was 31.2 percent after 32.7 percent in the previous year.

Of the individual divisions, the kitchen furniture industry performed best with a sales increase of 4.5 percent. Upholstered furniture manufacturers also closed 2020 with growth (plus 1.9 percent). In the other sectors, demand fell. The manufacturers of office and shop furniture turned over 9.1 percent less. In the case of other furniture, which also includes living room, dining and bedroom furniture, a drop in sales of 7 percent was recorded. There was a decrease of 3.5 percent for mattresses.
The German furniture industry employed an average of 82,554 people in 468 companies over the past year.
