US lumber production up by 4.4%

Sawmills in the US produced 31.045 billion board feet (bbf) of softwood lumber during the first 11 months of 2017. This represents a 4.4% increase over the same period last year.

As the Western Wood Products Assn. reported in its monthly Lumber Track report, the sawmills in Western US brought 13.006 bbf to this total, increasing by 3.1%, from 12.618 bbf in 2016. At the same time, Southern US sawmills contributed with 16.920 bbf - up 5.4% from 2016. In November, the output rose to 2.767 bbf, up by 5.0% year-on-year, but decreased by 7.9% from 3.0006 bbf in October 2017.

Sawmills in Western US brought 1.155 bbf to November’s total, up by 4.5% from the same period last year, but down 7.1% from October 2017. At the same time, sawmills in US South, accounted for 1.481 bbf, up by 5.3% from November 2016, but down 8.6% from October 2017.

According to the Lumber Track report, the apparent US softwood lumber consumption advanced 1.2% in the 11-month period to 44.269 bbf from 43.758 bbf a year earlier. Consumption in November alone was 3.961 bbf, a 4.5% increase from 3.791 bbf a year earlier, but down 6.7% from 4.247 bbf in October 2017.
